Phytoplankton blooms: composition, causes and consequences

Abstract

This paper presents a revision of phytoplankton blooms registered in Brazil. Fourty-nine bloom observations and 34 taxa belonging to CHRYSOPHYTA, CHLOROPHYTA, CYANOPHYTA Division are reported. Anabaena circinalis Rabh. ex Born et Flah., A. spiroides Kleb. var. crassa Lemm., Microcystis aeruginosa Kütz., Asterionella japonica Cleve et Mü11er ex Gran e Trichodesmium erythraeum Ehr. are the most common organisms. The composition, causes and consequences of the phenomena that occurs in freshwater, estuarine and marine environment are analysed and discussed.
