Sexual pheromones from brown algae: a chemotaxonomic approach

Abstract

Brown algae yield a series of hydrocarbons that act as sexual pheromones. These are responsible for localization of the gametes, and in some orders for their release. Sexual pheromones seem to be better phylletic than taxonomic markers.
