Abstract

Expressives populations of Cymbella affinis Kützing were found in samples from an artificial lake, located in Companhia Petroquímica do Sul - COPESUL, Triunfo city, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Frustules of this diatom were studied in light and electrom microscope (SEM). From the examination of aproximately 237 frustules, morfological variations encountered overlap with some characteres of other stalk and stigmata species from Cymbella genus. The actual taxonomic criteria delimiting these species have to be clearly defined.
