Colonial women’s literature: Fernanda de Castro and Maria Amélia Rodrigues in the Colonial Literature Competitions (1926-1931)

Based on the considerations of Inocência Mata (2014) regarding Portuguese colonial literature and Ana Paula Ferreira (2020) and Jessica Falconi (2021) on Portuguese colonial literature authored by women, this article analyzes three novels by female authors: Mariazinha em África (1925) and O veneno do sol (1929) by Fernanda de Castro, and Adão e Eva (1931) by Maria Amélia Rodrigues, who competed in the Portuguese Colonial Literature Competitions between 1926 and 1931. We are interested in understanding how female authorship reworks or reaffirms certain themes of Portuguese colonial literature, as well as possible distinctive elements of female authorship. In general, we understand that the authors were accomplices of Portuguese colonialism, at the same time that they produced new aesthetic and political perspectives for colonial literature.
