Hotel novo mundo: a critical study in light of the structure of the novel

Abstract

This article aims to provide a critical analysis of the novel Hotel Novo Mundo, by Ivana Arruda Leite. The discussion to be presented concerns the structural theory of the novel, since structural criticism strives to create a poetics interested in building a structural model that could encompass all existing narratives. Structuralism, then, proposes the abandonment of the particular examination of works, as well as presenting them as the realization of something other than themselves: which demonstrates the structure of literary discourse itself, formed by the abstract set of procedures that characterize it, as typical property of man’s mental organization. Furthermore, these questions emanate from the narrative and will be presented and analyzed, since, evidently, such analysis does not exhaust the knowledge of the structure of the novel under study. Therefore, this structure is presented more at the level of narration and characters and has its implication and unfolding at the level of language. Therefore this end, authors who deal with the theoretical-critical aspect of the novel and its structure are used, which are: Affonso Romano de Sant’Anna (1974), Renné Wellek (1963), Silviano Santiago (2002), among others.
