Memórias da Marquesa de Rabicó: a fictiticious autofiction

Memórias da Emília, published by Monteiro Lobato in 1936, tells the story of the making of “Memórias da Marquesa de Rabicó”, which recounts adventures in the universe of Sítio do Picapau Amarelo while breaking the conventional reading pacts of the genre by alternating narrators (autodiegetic, homodiegetic and heterodiegetic) and including invented memories. That said, this article proposes to analyze the writing process and the fictiticious final product “Memórias da Marquesa de Rabicó” focusing on its generic characteristics. With this aim, this study is mainly based on the theories of Philippe Lejeune (2008), Manuel Alberca (2007) and Vincent Colonna (2014) about autobiography, autofiction and their respective reading pacts. It is concluded, based on the analysis developed, that the initially autobiographical work of the title character can be read as a fictiticious autofiction due to its border construct between memory and invention within fiction.
