Structure of return: Bataille, Freud and Kafka

In this essay, we propose to examine the relationships between the structures present in the concepts of transgression, by Georges Bataille, and the death drive, by Sigmund Freud. The goal is not to simply approximate these concepts but to show how they connect regarding the way the structure of return becomes possible. Both the return to the forbidden in the movement of transgression and the return to the inanimate in the death drive indicate a destruction while also suggesting a possibility of creation. In this sense, we will observe how the structure of return seems to function in the works of both Bataille and Freud. To this end, in the text Letter to His Father by Czech writer Franz Kafka, we seek to understand how the destruction of transgression and the death drive can be the return to (re)creation of the structure through writing. We aim to show how the structure of return is an integral, pulsional, and insurgent part of structure and writing.
