Journey to Petrópolis: old age by Clarice Lispector in translation

The present work presents the analysis of the Brazilian short story “Viagem a Petrópolis”, by Clarice Lispector, in contrast to its translations into English and Spanish: “Journey to Petrópolis” and “Viaje a Petrópolis”, conducted, respectively, by Giovanni Pontiero and Paloma Vidal. The central objective was to investigate the lexicon of greater keyness in the selected short story, with the aid of WordSmith Tools software, in contrast to two versions of the story translated abroad. To reach this aim, the theoretical-methodological basis covers Translation Studies in their interfaces with Corpus Linguistics. Through quantitative-statistical analysis and the establishment of the lexical units Mocinha and Velha as the words of greater keyness (and, similarly, “Missy”, “Old”; Nena and Vieja, in the translations), this paper proceeds to the qualitative analysis in which the narrative role of old age (individual and social) in the text is interpreted. Regarding the translations, results show that translation choices can lead to different readings compared to the text in Brazilian Portuguese.
