Asilo nas Torres: a look at female science fiction in Brazil

Abstract

This study aims to reflect on Science Fiction of female authorship during the twentieth century in Brazil. For a long time, this genre remained marginalized, being considered unrepresentative in the national artistic agenda. Its speculative and futuristic feature, associated with scientific technological advances, seemed  not to dialogue with Brazilian social and cultural scene limiting its expressiveness. More recent researches have been taking a closer look at the specified productions from the beginning of twentieth century, especially on women production, and have shown that this genre has been used as a vehicle for reflections and critiques when it comes to the social transformations that occurred as a result of technological advances. In this sense, we will take as object of analysis  Asilo nas Torres (1979), by Ruth Bueno, written in a historical moment of social transformations. To do so, we build on the literary scholarship of Araújo (2018; 2016), Ginway (2010; 2004) and Shaw (2010), among others.

Naiara Sales Araújo, Universidade Federal do Maranhão

PHD em Literatura Comparada pela Universidade Metropolitana de Londres (2013) e Pós-doutorado em Literatura e Cinema pela Universidade de Granada. Atualmente é professora do mestrado Acadêmico em Letras da Universidade Federal do Maranhão e líder do Grupo de Pesquisa FICÇA (Ficção Científica, Gêneros Pós-Modernos e Representação Artísticas na Era Digital).
