Considering short stories as part of mankind’s history and as a mean of accessing peoples’ lifestyles and cultures, this paper aims at providing the reader with an overview of short story as a literary genre, to then explore the main theoretical postulates which support literary critics in regards to it, to finally present the situation of short story critics and production in contemporary Brazil. The reading hypothesis in the interpretation of the literary review which was developed in this paper is that defining short story is a complex and challenging task which literary critics hasn’t been able to accomplish. Passing through the work of researchers such as Gotlib (1988), Lucas (1983), Tavares (2003) and Zumthor (1993), this material intends on questioning the assumptions which have already been proposed regarding short stories, including those of Poe (2016), Cortázar (1993) and Quiroga (1940). At the end of the day, in post-modern, contemporary Brazil, the search for an essence which defines short stories as a literary genre is still not answered and is considered questionable in regards to its pertinency.
