Etimologia e Mitologia do Daimon

Luigi Magnani começava seu ensaio sobre Goethe, Beethoven e o demônico através de uma observação com a qual é difícil não concordar. A idéia de “demônico” que encontramos na época de Goethe é tão estranha ao “demoníaco” cristão – escrevia Magnani – quanto próxima do conceito clássico de daimon: “uma entidade misteriosa e obscura, que ora se impõe ao homem a partir do exterior, como misterioso desígnio divino (moira) [...] ora assume um significado mais espiritual por revestir a mais íntima natureza do homem” e colocar-se como a mais pura essência da alma, o seu caráter. Porém, é evidente que esse elemento demônico tem a ver, em primeiro lugar, com o mistério da criação artística: é aquela urgência formal prodigiosa, aquela multiformidade criativa que a era romântica resumiu na figura do gênio assumindo-a quase como seu mais específico objeto de culto. Mesmo assim, é improvável que o daimon clássico tivesse exatamente esse significado. Para avaliar o espaço intermediário seria necessária uma longa e paciente recapitulação: aqui, porém, gostaria de limitar-me a um olhar panorâmico sobre a semântica do daimon a partir de seu núcleo mais fugidio e precioso, ou seja, sua etimologia.
