According to Anne-Marie Thiesse, the practice of cutting and sewing of the instalments of novels published in the footer of newspaper pages by French readers in the nineteenth century was recurring and legitimate. In Brazil, we have not found research on this practice of appropriation of the serial novel by Brazilian readers in the nineteenth century. However, through the very disposition of fictional narratives in pages and columns of the periodicals, the purpose of this article is to verify that the readers of newspapers from Belém in the nineteenth century, just like the French, could make use of this cutting and sewing technique of instalments of serial novels to manufacture rudimentary forms of books.
