Onde a Linha?

João Cabral, em «Murilo Mendes e os rios», relembra uma curiosa atitude do poeta mineiro: em nome do Paraibuna, que banha sua natal Juiz de Fora, saudava reverente, chapéu à mão, cada rio que encontrava pelo caminho em suas andanças espanholas. Na penúltima das quatro quadras do poema, Cabral diz nunca ter perguntado a Murilo «onde a linha / entre o de sério e de ironia» deste «ritual», contentando-se com rir «amarelo / como se pode rir na missa». Na explicação que, anos depois, já morto Murilo, Cabral aventa para aquele «rito» (o léxico do sagrado atravessa o poema), parece optar pela seriedade do gesto: «nos rios, cortejava o Rio, / o que, sem lembrar, temos dentro».
