Women Workers in the Brazilian Northeast: Factory, Family and Domestic Violence

Abstract

In this article, we will argue about the changes represented by the entrance of women in the factory work in a region of recent industrialization, aiming at verifying to which extent such insertion, in a context of employment crisis in a region marked by informal labor activities, has influenced the redefinition of the family roles and increased conflicts that cause domestic violence. A group of 14 women workers that denounced the domestic violence in Crato City, Ceará State, was observed. We intend to recoup the changes perceived by these workers in its life of work and its ordinary life. The women entrance in the public sphere tends to pressure for changes in the traditional roles of gender with distinct gradations, since adjustments in the domestic life until disruption of the family group.

Iara Maria Araújo, Universidade Regional do Cariri, Ceará

É doutora em Sociologia pela Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC), professora adjunta da Universidade Regional do Cariri (URCA) e bolsista de produtividade em pesquisa (BPI) pela FUNCAP. Tem experiência na área de sociologia, com ênfase em sociologia do trabalho, sociologia da educação, sociologia econômica e do desenvolvimento, trabalho e gênero, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: reestruturação produtiva, industrialização regional, arranjos produtivos, redes sociais, qualificação profissional, violência de gênero, gênero e educação.

Jacob Carlos Lima, Universidade Federal de São Carlos

É doutor em Sociologia pela Universidade de São Paulo (USP, 1992), com pós-doutorado no Department of Urban Studies and Development do Massachussetts Institute of Technology, Estados Unidos (2001). Professor titular no Departamento de Sociologia da Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar) e pesquisador do CNPq, atua em pesquisas nas áreas de sociologia do trabalho, urbana, econômica e do desenvolvimento, destacando-se os seguintes temas: industrialização regional, redes sociais e mercados de trabalho urbanos, reestruturação produtiva, cooperativas de trabalho, informalidade, mobilidades, estudos culturais do trabalho e economia solidária.

Izabel Cristina Ferreira Borsoi, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo

É graduada em Psicologia pela Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (UFES, 1987), mestre em Psicologia Social pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP, 1993) e doutora em Sociologia pela Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC, 2003). Professora do Departamento e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Sociais da UFES, tem atuado principalmente nas áreas de psicologia social do trabalho e sociologia do trabalho, estudando trabalho, saúde e modo de vida.
