Abstract

There are great variations of the representations of the self not only throughout history but also in different cultures - although the concept presents universally common aspects. Also in the professional and academic realms, we have a great diversity of representations. Those "concepts" "notions", Ideas" or representations" of self can be hardly understood from a point of view that draws a strict dichotomy between "science" and "common sense", like it happens in the original scheme of the social representation theory. Therefore we have to adopt an epistemology that doesn't take as contradictory scientific knowledge and social representations in a mechanical way and that incorporates the specific characterization of the representations of self among psychotherapists.
