Lutheranism in Brazil is almost the same age as the Independence of the country. From 1824 on, German Lutheran immigrants, recruitedby the Brazilian imperial government, came not for religious but social economic reasons. After the German unification in 1870, the nationalism increased and the German Lutheran identification was solidified. Because ofthe War, the Estado Novo (New State) - established by Getúlio Vargas - prohibited theeducation in German, dismantling the network of parochial schools. The use of the German language was prohibited, and the sermons hat to be preached in Portuguese. However, the deepest changes oocurred in thiscentury, in the 70's. From the beginning the Lutheranism was sociologically characterised as a Church.
