The eighties' were marked in Florianópolis by the notable expansionof the touristic activity which promoted significative changes at the local maritime landscape. Tourism was increasingly believed to be the last resource for the local economy, generating new working places and, at the same time, an essentialelement for environmental preservation. The touristic monoactivity, at the moment, represents the great ideological force within the collective unconsciousness of the inhabitants of Florianópolis. However, frequently the festive masks hide a Medusan face. This text intends to discuss elements which don't appear in the apologetic discourses of the local social agents like the very low ratio ofjobs created thereby in the local working market and the autophagic feature (predatory of the environment) of the "industry without chimneys".
