This paper examines the relationship between the institutionalisation of civil associations in Florianópolis/SC (Brazil) and the opening and closureof the political system, during the years that followed the military coup. The
research has included and thematically classified the officially registered
associations. Afterwards, the tendencies of the different types of associations
have been analysed within three distinct historical periods: 1964-73 (closure of political system); 1974-83 (transition to democracy); 1984-93 (institu-tionalisation of democracy). The study also discusses the evolution of the different types of associations and the democratic opportunities offered by the State. During the authoritarian phase, the tendency lent itself to a non-political type of association, but within the process of democratisation, political contention has flourished.
