This article reviews the postulates regarding the Portuguese emigration to Brazil, starting from the study of a community of the Region of the Minho River, and emphasizes the necessity of going beyond general and aggregative approaches, when searching for an analysis based on a regional and microanalytical perspective. The author tries to catch the differentstrategies used by individuals and families within the studied population
for ensuring their social reproduction. The social and economic situation in
Portugal during the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century
provides the background for this analysis, based upon the literary images of the typical Portuguese emigrant.
