Teófilo Dias and the accumulation of different poetics in his poetry

Abstract

Romanticism, Realism and Parnassianism in poetry of Teófilo Odorico Dias de Mesquita, a poet from Maranhão that lived and produced his poetry during the years of 70’s and 80’s of the XIX century. For that, I used the computational tool Aoidos, that made an automatic scan of the written poetry in Portuguese and Spanish and can also give formal elements of versification such as quantity of metrics, scheme rhythms and syllabic accommodations process. In addition of qualitative analysis, a close reading of the poems that are present in Lira dos verdes anos (1878, Dias) e Cantos tropicais (1878, Dias), I made in this study quantitative analysis in Fanfarras (1882, Dias) and in works from poets from Romanticism, Realism and Parnassianism. From the computational analyzes made, I highlight the automatized data collected of the metric system (specially the verses of 6, 7, 10 and 12 syllables), the use of heroic and sapphic decassyllables, the use of classic alexandric verse and signalepha and syneresis metaplasms. As result of the research, I considered that there is no uniformity in the poetic of Maranhão’s author according to what suggests Silvio Romero (1905), for example. He suggests that Teófilo Dias was the introducer of Parnassianism in Brazil when he published Fanfarras. And on the contrary, we see that there exists an accumulation of different poetics in his work.
