Abstract

The starting point of this paper is a study proposed by Oliveira & Batoréo (2014) with focus on VLoc and LocV constructions in two national varieties of Portuguese: Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and European Portuguese (EP). Our proposal, inspired by the original paper, discusses only VLoc construction instantiated by the verb desculpar (‘to forgive’) and explores the incidental hypothesis that the form desculpa is not a verbal form, but a nominal one (‘sorry’). The discussion presented here seems to explain conflicts observed in Portugal in some cases of verbal interaction between Brazilian and Portuguese speakers. The analysis proposed is based on Cognitive Grammar, a model of Cognitive Linguistics. It articulates different norms of imperative in their socio-cognitive status, on one hand, and the nominalization of verbs, on the other. The socio-cognitive status discussed here consists of gradient entrenchment and gradient conventionality. Our study endorses the original hypothesis but dissociates the distribution of desculpa (V) and desculpa (N) from VLoc construction.
