Segmentation and translation strategies used by human translators: from clause combining to rhetorical structure

Abstract

This paper aims at investigating the segmentation and translation strategies used by human translators. The analysis is performed at the textual structure following the Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST). The corpus consists of thirteen synopses of films and their English-Portuguese versions made by undergraduate students of Translation. In the analysis, we investigated the frequency of agreement between text segmentation into elementary discourse units and compared the rhetorical structure of both the source text and the translations. The analysis allowed us to identify five different strategies and two inadequacies used by translators in the process of translating texts from English to Portuguese. The results show that human translators, unlike mechanical translators, promote inevitable transformations in the linguistic structures of the translated texts, which are the result of the translators’ relationship with both the foreign language and their first language. Because it is human, it distances itself from an ideal of perfection, as well as from a possible search for structural equivalences between languages that are, strictly speaking, different.

Juliano Desiderato Antonio, Universidade Estadual de Maringá

Possui graduação em Letras pela Universidade Estadual de Londrina (1994), mestrado e doutorado em Linguística e Língua Portuguesa pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (1998/2004)), campus de Araraquara, e pós-doutorado em Estudos Linguísticos pela Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (2011), campus de São José do Rio Preto. É docente da Universidade Estadual de Maringá. Tem experiência na área de Linguística, com ênfase em Funcionalismo, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Funcionalismo, Ensino de gramática e Estrutura Retórica do Texto. Foi coordenador do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras (Mestrado e Doutorado) da UEM de 2016 a 2018.

Liliam Cristina Marins, Universidade Estadual de Maringá

Graduada em Letras habilitação Português-Inglês/UEM (2007), Mestre em Letras/UEM (2010) e Doutora em Letras/UEM (2013). Atualmente é professora Assistente do quadro efetivo do Departamento de Letras Modernas da Universidade Estadual de Maringá e professora permanente do Programa de Pós-graduação em Letras da referida instiuição. Tem experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em Língua Inglesa, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: formação do leitor, literaturas de língua inglesa, tradução e leitura.

Luiza Prevedel Pereira, Universidade Estadual de Maringá

Técnica em Informática pela Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná (UTFPR-CM) e graduada em Letras português/francês pela Universidade Estadual de Maringá (UEM). Atualmente é mestranda em Descrição Linguística pelo programa de pós-graduação da Universidade Estadual de Maringá (UEM).
