The film Arrival and the permanence of the romantic vision of language

This paper takes into consideration the linguistic ideas implied by the movie Arrival (2016). It is argued that the movie script is saturated with romantic ideas about how language works. This paper identifies three of those ideas: i. The mimesis between language and culture; ii. Writing as an expression of culture; iii. The bon sauvage myth and its rapport with language. It is also argued that the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis may be traced back to romantic ideas as developed by Swiss philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau.
