About the Journal

The proposal to create an international scientific journal was conceived in 2006 by the late Professor João Ernesto Escosteguy Castro, then supervisor of the Decision Support Systems Laboratory (LabSAD) – http://www.labsad.ufsc.br. LabSAD is affiliated with the Department of Production and Systems Engineering (DEPS) of the Technological Center (CTC) at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC).

The initiative arose from the need to establish a scientific communication channel for research produced by the institutions that are members of the Montevideo Group Association of Universities (AUGM), in accordance with the quality standards required by international indexing databases. The objective was to create an electronic journal with international reach and indexing potential, thereby contributing to increasing the visibility of research conducted within the Ibero-American community.

In 2008, Professor Myriam Eugênia Ramalho Prata—then Deputy Head of DEPS/UFSC and Coordinator of the Mechanical and Production Engineering Academic Committee (NDEMP) of AUGM—and Professor Nelson Casarotto Filho, who assumed the supervision of LabSAD that same year, continued the project originally conceived by Professor João Ernesto Escosteguy Castro.

In March 2009, a meeting was held at the Center for Education Sciences (CED) at UFSC, attended by Professor Myriam Prata Barbejat, Professor Nelson Casarotto Filho, Ph.D. candidate Fladimir Fernandes dos Santos, and LabSAD secretary Zelita Chaves de Souza. The group sought guidance from Professor Rosângela Schwarz Rodrigues regarding the procedures required to include the journal in the newly established UFSC Scientific Journals Incubator.

As a result of this collective effort, the inaugural issue of the Iberoamerican Journal of Industrial Engineering (IJIE) was published during the first half of 2009, officially marking the beginning of its editorial activities.

It is worth noting that IJIE was the first scientific journal to join the UFSC Scientific Journals Incubator, an initiative of the Department of Information Science whose objectives include fostering the creation of new journals, enabling the testing of new versions of the SEER platform (Electronic System for Journal Publishing), promoting training activities in digital scientific publishing, and supporting research in the field.

In 2025, the Iberoamerican Journal of Industrial Engineering was officially incorporated into the UFSC Journals Portal (https://periodicos.bu.ufsc.br/), consolidating its position as a recognized institutional scientific journal committed to promoting open science and disseminating technical and scientific knowledge in the fields of Industrial Engineering and related areas.
