About the Journal
Focus and Scope
Iberoamerican Journal of Industrial Engineering (IJIE) is a biannual online, international, peer-reviewed journal published by the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Federal University of Santa Catarina.
Created in 2009, IJIE publishes original papers, review papers and case studies. Special Issues devoted to highly relevant topics in industrial engineering will occasionally be published.
The specific publication coverage can be found on this website, under the Submit your Article menu (Article submission topics).
Objectives
IJIE’s mission is to contribute for spreading knowledge on Industrial Engineering and related fields, through the publication of scientific articles. Articles of pure literature reviews will not be accepted, except for cases where they develop conceptual-theoretical analysis and state-of-the-art reviews.
IJIE is a scientific journal published in open access format, with no costs for readers nor for authors.
Readership
Professors, researchers, students and professionals in Industrial Engineering and related fields.
Peer Review Process
- All submitted articles are subjected to peer review.
- Upon submission, the manuscript to be reviewed is distributed to 3 qualified reviewers. The authors names and other information are kept confidential, as well as the reviewers’ names, to guarantee impartiality (Ensuring a Blind Peer Review).
- Evaluation results may recommend: a) acceptance, b) rejection and c) acceptance with minor or major revisions. Authors should then make any suggested changes in the article and return a revised version through the platform.
- The policy of evaluation follows the flowchart of editorial policy of the magazine (About this Publishing System).
- Criteria for evaluation of articles:
1 Authors: Professors, researchers, students and professionals graduated in Industrial Engineering and related fields.
2 Scientific contribution: subjects that are relevant and current in the field.
3 Objectives (clear and well defined).
4 Literature Review (if it reflects knowledge state-of-the-art the field’s).
5 Article’s conceptual or theoretical consistency (adequate and well structured).
6 Research method used (clearly defined and consistent with the article’s objective).
7 Data and results analysis (correct data interpretation, linked to the theoretical basis).
8 Conclusions (based on research data, clear and objective).
9 Text writing and organization (orthography, grammar, clearness, objectivity and formal structure).
10 Formatting technical criteria established by IJIE.
Publication Frequency
IJIE – Iberoamerican Journal of Industrial Engineering publishes every six months in electronic format.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content. All the published articles might be downloaded integrally and free of cost.
There are no article processing charges, submissions fees, or any other costs required of authors to submit articles to this journal.
IJIE provides public access to all its content, according to the principle that free access to researches creates a stronger global knowledge exchange. This access is associated to a growth in reading and citation of an author. For more information on this approach visit Public Knowledge Project (PKP).

Preface
IJIE – Iberoamerican Journal of Industrial Engineering: A new landmark for the Laboratory for Decision Support Systems (LabSAD - Laboratório de Sistemas de Apoio à Decisão) - http://www.labsad.ufsc.br.
Editing IJIE represents a new landmark to the LabSAD. It might not be a novelty, but it is a challenge that will make our experience with the Revista de Produção Online (PO) worthwhile.
It is worth to remember that the idea of PO was brought up by LabSAD in 2001, during the Strategic Planning Meeting of the Production Engineering Brazilian Association (ABEPRO - Associação Brasileira de Engenharia de Produção) - http://www.abepro.org.br. By then, gathered together in Canasvieiras, Florianópolis, the council projected and dreamt about the possibility of having a media channel as a promoting tool for the associated researchers. President José Luiz Duarte Ribeiro received numerous contributions and suggestions from the board members who were there, all aimed at the future of Production Engineering in Brazil.
Granted that ABEPRO would contribute with the financial resources needed to make the project elaboration viable, the responsibility for execution was given to the vice-president, Professor João Ernesto Escosteguy Castro. Professor Weimar Rocha was named to search for information on the legal aspects for registering the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN). Professor Maria do Carmo Duarte Freitas was in charge of the Project and the technology definition for the journal’s operation and promotion. In less than two months the team added two more students/researchers - Cláudia Regina Ziliotto Bomfá (Production Engineering Masters’ student) e Alex Sandro Gaspareto (Production Engineering graduate student). From this team’s excellent work resulted, on its third year of existence, a mark of seventy thousand journal downloads, consolidating it as an important scientific publication for the Production Engineering field, with visitor researchers from different countries such as Brazil, Argentina, United States, France, Portugal and Germany, all due to the capacity of spreading the results of scientific researches made in Brazil fast, efficiently and with low cost. Among other gains, the LabSAD experience has demonstrated that the management model developed reduced time for article publication. Besides that, the cost of maintenance of an electronic magazine has proved to be significantly lower than the conventional printed model.
This experience is now being put to test. The IJIE project brings the expectation of providing the scientific community, on Industrial Engineering and related fields, with a quality product according to scientific standards.

IJIE’s history and timeline
The thought of developing an international scientific journal was conceived in 2006, by Professor João Ernesto Escosteguy Castro, who was a Supervisor at the Laboratory for Decision Support Systems (LabSAD – Laboratório de Sistemas de Apoio à Decisão) – http:www.labsad.ufsc.br. The lab is located at the Post-Graduate Program in Production Engineering (PPGEP - Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia de Produção), Technological Center (CTC – Centro Tecnológico), at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC – Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina).
The idea emerged as a response to the need of providing a space for publication of the articles produced at the Universities that form the Montevideo University Group Association (AUGM - Asociación de Universidades Grupo Montevideo). There was a need to offer the scientific community an electronic journal according to the indexation criteria of the international databases.
In the year 2008, Professor Myriam Eugênia Ramalho Prata Barbejat, Sub-chief at the Systems and Production Engineering Department (DEPS - Departamento de Engenharia de Produção e Sistemas), at the UFSC, and also a Coordinator at the Disciplinary Section for Production and Mechanical Engineering (NDEMP - Nucleo Disciplinario de Ingeniería Mecánica y de la Producción) at the AUGM and also Professor Nelson Casarotto Filho (who took charge of the LabSAD supervision in 2008), carried on the ideas of Professor João Ernesto Escosteguy Castro.
In March 2009, in the at the Education Sciences Center (CED - Centro de Ciências da Educação), at the UFSC, Professors Miryam Barbejat and Nelson Casarotto, the Doctorate Student Fladimir Fernandes dos Santos and UFSC employee Zelita Chaves de Souza, had a meeting in which they exchanged information with Professor Rosângela Schwarz Rodrigues about the insertion of IJIE at the UFSC Journal’s Portal. In that sense, it was decided that IJIE will initially be hosted at the Incubator of the UFSC Journal’s Portal, until it reaches the expected criteria to be hosted at the UFSC Journal’s Portal - http://www.periodicos.ufsc.br.
Finally, in the 1st semester of 2009 the Launching Edition of IJIE was published.
