Abstract
The mite Demodex canis, when associated with dermatological chages, causes the so- called demodectic mange or demodicosis. Demodicosis is one of the most common dermatitis in dogs, and its pathogeny is associated with the host immune response. A total of 1224 clinical files of dogs with diagnoses of dermatopathies, attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Federal University of Uberlandia from January 1994 to December 1998, were analyzed. Out of the 1224 studied clinical files, 116 (9,47%) presented the confirmed diagnosis of demodicosis. There were statistically significant differences (p<0,05) of the occurrence of demodectic mange among the different age ranges, and these differences were greater among dogs of less than one year old. However, no statistically significant difference was found with regard to sex.
