Energy expenditure and the relative participation of fat as substrate were assessed in male subjects under three conditions: with exercise performed in one single bout (1S); with exercise split in three bouts (3S); and without exercise (WE). The caloric cost was the same during the two exercise conditions. Energy expenditure was evaluated using the indirect calorimetry, open circuit method, during 13 hours on each experiment. The subjects were fed each day with the same individually balanced diet. Energy expenditure and lipid utilization were significantly (p < 0,05) higher in 1S and 3S than in WE. There was no difference between 1S and 3S in energy expenditure or in thermic effect of food. It was conclued that exercise split into three short sessions has the same effect on resting energy expenditure and on fat utilization as exercise performed in one single session, sinde its caloric cost is the same.Downloads
