This article deals with play behavior in a 5 member group of howlers monkeys (Alouatta fusca clamitans, Cabrera, 1940) from the Parque Estadual de Itapuã, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. One hundred and seventy bouts of play were observed from October 1989 to October 1990. Play occurs mainly among infants and this activity was very similar to that observed among infants of other species of the same genus. At first play was mainly exploratory and locomotory. As the infants grew up their independence from the mother became more evident, and social play began. The most common type was a dyadic wrestling and chasing; five invitation displays for social playing were identified.Downloads
