Abstract

One of the characteristics of current Brazilian demographic behavior is the increase in life expectancy, which indicates a potential predominance of elderly population in the future. As they are often affected by the carelessness of not only society ? but also the government ? their mental health tends to be even more neglected, since, even nowadays, this dimension receives less focus in Brazil due to a mechanistic view of human organism. The following cross-sectional and quantitative study aims to describe the relationship between mental condition with physical and social health of elderly people, based on the population with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) covered by a team of a Family Health Unit, since this group already faces adversities from the disease and comorbidity may influence the reduction of their well-being. In order to achieve the objective, it was administered an analysis of 210 medical records, as well as a literature review. There was great divergence when comparing the estimated population of diabetics with depressive or anxiety symptoms in literature and the presence of a diagnosis for mental disorders in medical records, indicating possible underdiagnoses of these diseases in the FHU.
