Abstract

Mental disorders have been increasing worldwide and the prevalence of Common Mental Disorder (CMD) among women is high, although it does not meet formal criteria for diagnosis of depression or anxiety, but leads to impairments in quality of life and psychosocial factors that cause functional disability and impairment in occupational roles. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between CMD and the quality of life of mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder. This is a quantitative, cross-sectional, correlational-descriptive study with a sample of 35 mothers assessed by the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) to identify suspected TMC and the WHOQOL-bref to investigate quality of life. A prevalence of 65.71% of mothers with suspected CMD was identified. In a Spearmen's correlation analysis between CMT and overall quality of life, a moderate and negative inverse correlation (r = -0.617; p <0.001) was found to be statistically significant, as mothers with suspected CMD showed impaired quality of life. However, it was verified that being a mother of children with autism there is a greater predisposition to the suggestion of CMD and low quality of life. It is necessary to receive and intervene in these mothers. Thus, it is necessary to offer an extended and humanized assistance, as well as to reflect on the possible damage caused to the mental health of mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder.
