Abstract

ABSTRACT: Suicide is considered a public health problem that generates economic, financial and social impacts, being the second leading cause of death among young people aged between 15 and 29 years. The objective of this work is to present the characterization of suicide in adolescents. This is an integrative literature review carried out in the Virtual Health Library through the PICO strategy for definition and guiding question. The search covered the period from 2016 to 2021, being selected articles according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, using the following descriptors: Suicide. Suicide attempt. Adolescent. Risk factors. The evaluation of the works allowed the elaboration of two categories of analysis: 1. Characteristics of suicidal behavior; 2. Reasons that lead adolescents to commit suicide. The results highlight the multi-causality of suicide in adolescence, with a predominance of females. Home was the most prevalent place for attempts and/or suicide. The most used means was poisoning/intoxication. Therefore, this article emphasizes the importance of therapeutic follow-up as an effective device to prevent suicidal behavior among adolescent.
