The objective of this study is to analyze the possible factors of the reduction of informality in Brazil in the decade of 2000. The possible factors are grouped into four categories: state regulation and its changes, workers' schooling, economic growth and structural changes. The results indicate a possible explanation for the decline in informality in the level of schooling, in structural changes, and partly in changes in state regulation and taxation. Economic growth does not seem to play an important role in this phenomenon.
