Rastafari, repatriación y lucha armada en Jamaica: un análisis del activismo de la African Reform Church en clave de la cultura afrocreolé (1959-1960)

Resumo

En este artículo se analiza el movimiento rastafari African Reform Church, liderado por el pastor Claudius Henry, en Jamaica entre los años 1959 y 1960, y sus acciones que pretendieron forzar la repatriación hacia Etiopía y la liberación colonial de los afrodescendientes en la isla en los términos del ideal del back-to-Africa.  A través del estudio de sus proclamas, las discusiones gubernamentales, del debate público y del juicio a los miembros de la organización, se busca insertar el proyecto del African Reform Church, inconcluso tras su represión, en los sentidos construidos en la larga duración por la cultura afrocreolé, los métodos de autodefensa conformados desde la década de 1930 por el rastafarismo, las ideas de autogestión garveyista y la asociación con una organización más allá de los límites nacionales. Así, la propuesta de Henry y su grupo se convirtieron en un germen de los mecanismos políticos que se desarrollaron con los movimientos del Black Power caribeño y norteamericano a fines de la década de 1960.
