CALL FOR SPECIAL ISSUE PROPOSALS 2026 – 2027
Esboços: histories in global contexts invites researchers to submit proposals for special issues to be published in 2026 and 2027.
Those interested in submitting a proposal should send it to the following e-mail address: esbocos@contato.ufsc.br.
Deadline for submitting proposals: February 27, 2026.
Format of special issues
Special issues must focus on a specific theme, approached through different objects, perspectives, and methodologies. Each special issue should include between 5 and 10 original and unpublished scholarly articles, in dialogue with current and/or historical research in the field. If more papers are accepted through the review process than can be accommodated in a Special Issue, they will be considered for publication in later regular issues of the journal.
Preparing a Proposal for a Special Issue
Special issue proposals may be submitted in Portuguese, English, or Spanish and must include:
- The names, positions, and institutions of the proposed Guest Editors. Proposals must include two or three guest editors with a doctoral degree, at least one of whom must be affiliated with a foreign research institution;
- A short proposed title for the Special Issue, no longer than 10 words;
- A brief description of the rationale behind the proposal, in English, setting out the importance of the theme to global studies;
- A list of proposed paper titles, at least 4, with the authors' names, together with an indication of their commitment to contribute, their institutional affiliations, and abstracts of their contributions.
- Details on the origin of the proposal, e.g., a workshop, conference, research project etc.
Recommendations:
Esboços: histories in global contexts strongly encourages proposals that consider diversity of gender, region, institutions, and countries, both among the special issue editors and the contributing authors.
Original and unpublished articles may be submitted in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, with special value placed on proposals that include contributions in English, whether originally written or translated prior to submission.
The selection of proposals will be carried out by the executive editorial team, considering the originality of the theme, its relevance to debates in Global History, and the quality of the articles and authors involved.
After selection, the special issue editors will receive a schedule with deadlines for all stages of preparation and publication.
The Responsibilities of Guest Editors
It is the responsibility of the Guest Editors to prepare a Call for Papers, invite contributors, assist them in submitting papers via the online submission system, indicate reviewers and write a short overview to introduce the Special Issue. Guest Editors will not receive any monetary compensation for the work associated with publishing the Special Issue.
Guest editors are also responsible for ensuring the timely submission of invited articles, including their revised versions.
Responsibilities of the Special Issue Section editors:
It is the responsibility of the Editors for Special Issues and not the Guest Editors to decide on the acceptance (or otherwise) of submissions, either pre- or post-peer review, as well as communicating final decisions to Authors. Editors for Special Issues are not obliged to accept any submission, even if invited, and should not be afraid to reject any submissions that are substandard.
The Editors for Special Issues are also responsible for managing the peer review process, though Guest Editors should feel free to recommend potential reviewers. Finally, it is important to note that Guest Editors will not automatically have access to reviewer comments.
The double-blind peer review process for Special Issue submissions is identical to that of regular submissions to the Journal.
