Abstract

The current article analyzes the intellectual connections developed throughout the 30s between the Commissioner of Indian Affairs of USA, John Collier, and the Mexican Moisés Sáenz, one of the most distinguished indigenistas of the post-revolutionary Mexico. The aim is demonstrating how the mutual influences of this intellectual relationship were fundamental for the construction of an indigenismo characterized by respecting and valuing cultural pluralism. In the internal U.S. scenario, it led up the transformation of public policies toward indigenous peoples and, in the continental context, it originated the Inter-American Indian Institute design, located in Mexico. This analysis takes place in the Intellectual History field through a transnational perspective and using the relational paradigm methodology.
