Between Empires and Republics: possible dialogues between Brazil and the Ottoman world

Abstract

This article establishes a dialogue between Ottoman history and Brazilian historical formation, inspired by the reflections of Monique Sochaczewski. It examines how political and social structures of the Ottoman world — especially the millet sistemi — were transposed and reinterpreted within immigrant communities in Brazil, with particular emphasis on the Armenian experience. The text also compares the Brazilian “Young Turks” and the tenentista movement, highlighting parallels between processes of authoritarian modernization and social exclusion at the twilight of both empires and the dawn of both republics. Finally, the article advocates for the expansion of Brazilian historiography through transnational and connected perspectives.
