Abstract

The objective of this research is to draw a historical review and a gender study increase when investigating the history and the demolish of the stereotypes and social roles of men and women who took part in the process of settlement of the cities in western State of São Paulo in the first fifty years of the twentieth century. Through the interpretation of the evidences observed in the legal and journalistic documents of the city of Bauru, it was possible to reveal the silences about the female presence and the forms of repression they experienced and continue to face their consequences in the Brazilian social and political scenery up to the present time. The research is sensitive to the recent reflections and debates about the historical paradigms, to the different movements of the social actors, the qualities in time and space, which enable us to catch a glimpse of the daily life of the cities in the State of São Paulo and to review the traditional narratives, as they show that these cities –in the condition of suburbs – have their particularities in the modernization process –and, quite often, help break the causal relationship with the metropolis of São Paulo, a dynamic centre of monetary expansion.
