This article addresses the constitution of the collection of documents on the African presence on the Island of Santa Catarina that is the basis of the “Santa Afro Catarina” website. In the Santa Afro Catarina outreach program, the use of historical documents in the historian’s craft and in the education environment were combined to a heritage education initiative. This initiative is composed by a series of projects that give new meanings to urban spaces and propose new approaches for teaching local history and for addressing cultural tourism. It consists of disseminating new narratives based on historical research, which give agency to men and women of African descent, enslaved or freed, in different individual and collective experiences.Downloads
