the purpouse of this article is try to understand how was articulated the desire of mime, in others words, the desire of the being the other, the "white" and "civilized" european in the context of the First Republic among brazilians intellectuals. This discussion will start on the speech of Silvio Romero, that is recognized as a member of the brazilian cultural elite in the pointed out context.
