This article analyzes the varying repertoires of student protest in Uruguay in the recent past, focusing on four important cycles of protest: 1958, 1968, 1983 and 1996. Starting from a conceptual and methodological reflection, which is nourished by the results of a research project carried out by a
multidisciplinary group during 2020-2021, the work seeks to contribute to an understanding of student´s
attempt to block, modify, support, or propose educational and social transformations. Focusing from a historical sociological perspective and using a database of nearly four hundred student protest events over the twelve years, this article focuses on the determinants and effects of students’ tactical decisionmaking. The work analyzes the repertoires of student action, as well as its impact on media visibility, considering the weight of other variables linked to resource mobilization. As main results, the research shows that there is a significant relationship between the type of demand and the tactical choice made by student movements, which then also affects their media visibility. Specifically, for educational demands, internal or structural disruptive tactics tend to predominate which, in turn, have greater media visibility in the press.
