The environmental agenda at The Institute of Biological Sciences (ICB) of UFMG: curriculum, programs, and financing (1970-1990)

This article aims to discuss the immersion of the environmental agenda in the Institute of Biological Sciences (ICB) of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), between the 1970s, when environmental issues began to be discussed, and 1990, when the first years of functioning of the Master's Degree in Ecology, Conservation and Wildlife Management (ECMVS), which we believe is the result of the incursion of this agenda at the ICB. To do so, we start from the concepts of collective thought and inter-collective traffic of thought, by Ludwik Fleck (2010), and transnational activism networks, by Keck and Sikkink (1996). Using administrative sources obtained from the Institutional Archives of the ICB/UFMG, we show how this movement caused curricular changes, mainly in the discipline of ecology, highlighting a controversy between the areas of natural history and biological sciences. Furthermore, we placed the introduction of the environmental theme at the Institute by internal and guest professors, in academic disciplines and events, in which topics ranging from pollution to the conservation of endangered species were addressed. Finally, we discuss, as one of the consequences of this movement, the creation, in 1989, of a program aimed at biodiversity conservation - the postgraduate program in ECMVS -, highlighting the relationships established with foreign conservation institutions, which was important for the maintenance and consolidation of the course in its early years, indicating the interest of research professors in the study of this topic, but also of forei
