In the 1930s Goiás underwent significant historical transformations in line with the political changes of the new government of President Getúlio Vargas. The ambition to create a new capital city to replace the old one had, at the same time, political and economic will. During this period, some politicians, architects, and engineers supported the idea of creating a new “metropolis” that could be built to increase industrialization and food production in Central Brazil. The progressive city model was the preference of the majority, due to the orderly distribution of spaces and its vision of transport systems and energy production. Our approach privileges the role of wild nature in justifying the success of building a modern city that would attract people to explore natural resources and produce wealth. Nature is also highlighted as an environment to be tamed and also for other useful purposes in the urban context of the new capital of Goiás. The archival research was based on different sources and archives, with vast material collected in newspapers from the 1930s, articles, maps, and reports that dealt with the atmosphere that preceded the creation and construction of Goiânia. We argue that at the heart of the urban project, natural issues played an important historical role, whether due to soil fertility, topography, or the availability of forests and rivers.
