Abstract

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1934-2021), one of the founders of positive psychology, developed important reflections regarding happiness and intrinsic motivation, among others. Based on these reflections, he presents the concept of flow state in order to translate a special state of consciousness in which specific characteristics are described by individuals who achieve it, such as mindfulness, feeling of possible control and distorted temporal perception. But the descriptivist model adopted by Csikszentmihalyi reaches a limit regarding its own interpretation. In need of a normative analysis, flow theory risks neglecting the ethical presuppositions that underlie itself, since it is a theory that discusses happiness. We intend to use the contributions of the Italian-German philosopher Vittorio Hösle (1960-) on normativity to present the potential gains that it can offer to flow psychology. Our aim, therefore, is to show that the concept of meaning proposed by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s theory can be enrichened by Hösle’s philosophical propaedeutic.
