The Ethics of Abortion Beyond the Paradigm of Rights

Abstract

The debate over abortion usually focuses the paradigm of rights. In this paper I try to explore ethical issues that go beyond this paradigm. I will focus three main points: a- the attribution of value to the embryo; b- the approach of the Ethics of Care; c- the approach of Virtue Ethics. I’ll try to show that ethical discussions beyond the paradigm of rights are important not only in order to criticize abortions in specific situations, but also to create contexts where women feel more comfortable in making their own decisions.

Departamento: filosofia. Área: ética (com especial interesse nas éticas de Aristóteles, Kant e nas Éticas das Virtudes contemporâneas).

Desde 2015 desenvolve um projeto de pesquisa sobre as Éticas das Virtudes e a Ética do Cuidado como propostas alternativas às éticas deontológicas e consequencialistas. Seus interesses incluem a importância da noção de identidade pessoal para a ética; a discussão sobre egoísmo e altruísmo nas éticas eudaimônicas; a crítica ao reducionismo científico na ética; o problema do determinismo e da responsabilidade moral face aos avanços da neurociência; o conceito de felicidade e suas implicações éticas.epartamento: filosofia.
