Abstract

Multiculturalism is often criticized because of its alleged tolerance with internal restrictions, that is, with restrictions to the basic rights of vulnerable members within cultural minorities. This article addresses this objection by identifying three motivations of multiculturalism – communitarian, pluralist, and individualist – and by arguing that toleration of internal restrictions can be predicated only of the first and third forms of multiculturalism. With regards to the individualist version of multiculturalism, I show that its tolerance of internal restrictions is not a logical consequence of the theory.  It is thus vindicated as a theory of justice and it is suggested that it is a relevant normative framework to address issues related to social justice of indigenous peoples in Latin America.
