Dental care for prisioners: experience report

The objective of this work is to present the activities carried out by professors, postgraduate and undergraduate students of Dentistry and Speech Therapy at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in a prison in Florianópolis. Through the union of teaching, research and extension, specialized and humanized dental care is sought for prisioners. In the consults, which started in 2022 and are expected to last 3 years, an anamnesis, physical examination, questionnaires, discuss about the cases, diagnosis and execution of treatments are carried out for inmates. Treatments are carried out to provide pain relief and improve the oral condition, recovering the self-esteem and dignity of this population. This project reaches the eminent demand for care and epidemiological survey of the prisonioners population. Also enables clinical experiences outside the University environment and the execution of scientific research by students with the benefit of quality care for the vulnerable population of prisoners.
