Democracy and university extension

In this reflective essay I will present some thoughts on the process of implementing the curricular insertion of extension in Brazilian universities. For its development, I seek to rely especially on the theoretical body proposed by educators such as Paulo Freire and Darcy Ribeiro on the role of education and the university in the construction of citizenship. To this theoretical framework I add the foundations of the dialogical conception provided for in the national extension policy consolidated by Forproex, the basis for the definition of the National Extension Guidelines established by the CNE in 2018, as well as impressions learned from dialogues with extension managers over the last 7 years. Considering the complexity and breadth of the theme, I chose as the central dimensions of this reflective essay the movement around the recognition of extension as an academic dimension and the process of curricular insertion of extension, with the expectation of highlighting their potential in realizing democracy in higher education.
