Expanding access to oral health through the university in communities program: an experience report

Objective: To quantitatively describe the activities carried out by the Mobile Oral Health Units within the University in Communities Program, emphasizing the role of dentistry in comprehensive health care. Methodology: Reports of the activities conducted in 2023 were analyzed. Results: A total of 10 locations were served, and 1,928 primary care dental procedures of low and medium complexity were performed across various dental specialties. Conclusion: Oral health promotion initiatives have contributed to democratizing access to basic health services for underserved communities. In addition, these actions have played an important role in training professionals to work in the Unified Health System (SUS) through inter-, multi-, and transdisciplinary approaches. Consequently, the program has achieved its proposed goals, improving the population’s quality of life while fostering dialogical, generalist, and humanized training in line with the National Curricular Guidelines. In this context, the activities also generate significant social impact by strengthening the bond between the university and society, encouraging community participation, and promoting the transformation of local realities.
