University extension as a fundamental dimension in higher education institutions: reflections and challenges

This critical review discusses the relevant role of university extension as a fundamental dimension committed to public, inclusive, and democratic higher education. A reflexive analysis was conducted on the discussions held at the 52nd National Meeting of the Forum of Pro-Rectors of Extension of Brazilian Public Higher Education Institutions (FORPROEX), which led to the creation of the Goiânia Charter. The main topics addressed in the aforementioned charter were: technological mediation in extension activities, the relationship between extension and culture, the relationship between extension and postgraduate studies, and public policies for budgeting extension. Through discussions supported by specialized literature, the themes that shaped the scope of the Goiânia Charter were problematized. The need to strengthen and expand the formative potential of university extension for building a more just, equitable, and sustainable society is highlighted.
