The presence of innovation in the institutional development plans of public universities in Paraná – Brazil

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the presence of innovation in the Institutional Development Plans of public universities in Paraná, Brazil, analyzing how it happens and which work area focuses. It is an exploratory study and applied the qualitative research method of Content Analysis, which analyzed the original texts of Institutional Development Plans from all of the seven public universities (federal and state levels), collected from July to August/2010. The results identified the presence of innovation in six of the seven analyzed plans, with a large difference between federal and state universities. The federal universities present a bigger concern with innovation, while in the state ones, this subject was almost inexistent. The innovation appears mostly related with the areas of teaching and research, while in the university extension and internal process management it is less mentioned. One concludes that the innovation is not yet a widely present subject in the Paraná’s public universities planning.
