Abstract

Miconia cinnamomifolia is a native forest species which represents an economic potential to be exploited "capoeirões" and secondary forests of the Pluvial Atlantic Forest. The production of seedlings had not been successful due to problems of germination of the seed. Germination tests were made following the intenational rules of seed anaIysis (ISTA, 1976), the results being submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey test at 1% of probability. Seeds obtained from ripe and unripe fruit collected simultaneously revealed a significant positive photoblastic dormancy. Seeds from unripe fruit have already reached the stage of physiological maturation. The maintainance of seeds imbibed in the dark for 30 days did not signiticantly affect the viability and photoblastic sensitivity of tbe seeds. It is possible to obtain satisfactory levels of germination for this species if germination is done in tbe presence of light.
